Hey presto, good shot temp. A PID removes the need to do this and the heating cycle starts immediately cold water enters the boiler rather than many degrees later when the bimetallic strip thermostat in non PID machine would have it heating.
The result is somewhat less variation in shot temp, but boiler capacity and heating rates are still a factor. Ultimately the PID makes it easier, but will not necessarily deliver superior shots which are about coffee, dose and distribution. A PID Controller aids in making the coffee making and steam processes more consistent. The quality of the coffee produced is a whole other story I usually give mine 20 mins. A pid helped me eliminate another variable from my espresso process but only after I tasted the variability pre temp surfing, and calibrated my palate with 18mo living in Melbourne!!
Now I am delivering good shots on a regular basis - looking to start playing with brew temp now for the diff so coffees I am roasting in my Behmor! Depends on how long since the machine was switched on or how long it has been on and sat there doing nothing, but superheating. With coffee and coffee machines you need to "feel" what's happening rather than work with timers and assume they have given you the right "spot" for something to work at its best. That way, once all the overheated water has been purged, you cant help but be at the optimum place no more super heated water flow and will not burn the coffee.
If the heating light comes on again it doesnt matter, its what the water was doing on purge before you apply the group handle and start brewing, that counts. Unfortunately the tendency in these forums is for stuff to get way over complicated.
Once the above is all done, you should be looking at some pretty silky espresso. Some people argue that the Silvia, if used correctly, can rival machines that cost times as much, which is pretty impressive.
Looking to add milk? Read on If you are steaming milk with the Silvia, you need to add an extra stage to the above process. Before you start steaming milk, make sure you purge the steam wand into an empty milk jug from any water being held in the wand.
Once it starts just outputting dry steam, you know you are good to go. It's amazingly well built, built around a hardened steel chassis, housed in a stainless steel body and is reassuringly heavy. It has a commercial grade 58mm group head, portafilter and basket, which helps hugely in producing good quality espresso. It heats up in around 5 mins, but you do need to draw some water through the group a couple of times to help it reach a solid thermal mass good temperature over all machine.
Verify to see if the main switch is on. Are the fuse, the electrical plug and cable ok? How long does it take for the Rancilio Silvia to heat up? It can take around 10 or more mins to fully heat up your machine. What kind of water should I use? How do I empty the boiler? Try not to over fill. What size is the group head, basket and portafilter? Where are the Rancilio Silvia made? Rancilio Silvia Espresso machines are made in Italy. Machine is not heating up This could mean the safety thermostat may need to be reset.

We got straight to it, filled it and fired it up. What do you think? There is a heap of dead space… The brew boiler could easily move forward Plenty of dead space beside the steam boiler and under the visible plumb run from the steam boiler to the hot water solenoid. We think it would have been easily possible to better use the available realestate. The steam boiler could even have been laid down and moved partially under the brew boiler for a far more compact machine.
Time will tell… Testing… Our basic observations are that heating time from cold is rapid and after 10 minutes of warm up, shot temperature is reliable and repeatable after 3 or 4 shots or backflushes. Steam was also up to operating pressure within 10 minutes.
