In LCI was renamed Louisville College and in it inherited the portion of the estate of Jefferson Seminary designated for the use of higher education in Louisville.

LMI attracted large enrollments and prospered financially, but the college had difficulty remaining open. Proponents of grass roots democracy wanted to divert a portion of the medical school's resources to the college. They won a partial victory in , when the Kentucky legislature created the University of Louisville proper, combining the medical school, the college, and a newly created law school. Although there was now a common board of trustees, each division retained financial autonomy, and the college did not survive.

During the nineteenth century most of the professors in UofL's medical and law schools were drawn from the ranks of local physicians and attorneys who considered teaching a part-time vocation. By the s and s, however, the university felt pressure from educational reformers who not only believed schools should employ full-time instructors but who also advocated well-enforced national standards for academic training.

In this trend contributed to the revival of the liberal arts college, which had been all but forgotten during the second half of the century. A much more vibrant university added new programs--the Graduate School , School of Dentistry , Speed Scientific School , University College , Louisville Municipal College for Negroes , School of Music , and Kent School of Social Work --conformity to accreditation guidelines became increasingly important.

Expanded academic programs and the adherence to higher educational standards led to the appointment of full-time administrators before America's entry into World War I. The university has roots dating back to , and it was the first city-owned public university in the United States. The university consists of 12 schools and colleges, which include: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, J. The university has three campuses in the Louisville area — the Belknap, the Health Science, and the Shelby — yet it also has an International Campus in Panama, as well as various satellite facilities in the state of Kentucky.

On its main campus, there is an art museum, planetarium and Auguste Rodin's original sculpture of The Thinker for students to visit and enjoy.
