Why imperialism is wrong

At first when it occurs it may seem as a positive effect, but in the long run, for example in this case it was a negative effect. Imperialism was a good thing for the world. Imperialism allowed countries to gain power, as well as technological advances.

Though there were some cons to imperialism, it was still a good thing. Imperialism impacted societies in countless negative ways. It led to slave trade which then led to social discrimination around the world. It also damaged the cultures and created disunity among the natives. Last but not least, imperialism stripped countries off their natural resources and left nothing for the natives.

British desire for natural resources, slave labors and political dominance brought about long-term effects to South Africa, the negative effects include widespread racial discrimination and economic exploitation, but there were few positive effects which were the advances in agriculture, mining industry and education. The long term effects of imperialism on the colonized people are political changes such as changing the government reflect upon European traditions, economic changes that made colonies create resources for factories, and cultural changes that made people convert their religion.

They were controlling most of the world! But what makes this time so much more extreme is that Europe has way superior technology and science to back them up. But they believed it was. The first part of this is scientific racism. Since the s there has existed the idea that the world can be divided into a few main races, each with their own distinct physical and mental attributes.

European scientists again, air quotes look around the world and notice that people of color tend to be doing most of the manual labor. Also, a lot of them are less educated than, say, Europeans. They observe this fact and conclude that people of color are not as intelligent and are better suited to physical work than the other races. And also you would have been a terrible imperialist. So this idea of separate races with separate traits already exists. And in walks Charles Darwin.

Now, to be clear, I am not using air quotes when I say that Charles Darwin was a scientist. He just wanted to study bird or turtles or whatever. But his ideas propel scientific racism into full scale Social Darwinism. Darwin proposed two big ideas: evolution and survival of the fittest.

Basically, the more fit species will adapt, evolve, and survive over time while the weaker species will die out. They began to argue that industrialization and imperialism were just proof that white Europeans and Americans were just the more evolved species. It was natural that they would evolve to dominate the other, inferior races. And they also did a thing that is insanely racist and also really requires a visual — please check out antisocialstudies. As these ideas about evolution got established, Darwin also proposed that apes and human beings evolved from the same ancestors.

This is bad. There is a diagram from an American textbook in the s called the Types of Mankind that shows in succession the heads of a chimpanzee, an African, and a European. What this diagram is suggesting is that Europeans are the most highly evolved and, thus, the logical leaders of the world.

Oh and also. The European head in the diagram? The Greek god. Talk about a superiority complex. So these ideas justify to many Europeans the terrible things that are done to non-white people across the world during the Age of Imperialism.

Even though it has been over sixty years since Myanmar was imperialized, remnants of the outcome of imperialism can still be well observed. The language, the clothing, the infrastructures all have been affected by imperialism. These effects may deceive people into thinking that imperialism was all sunshine and rainbows but in reality, imperialism brutally destroyed the different aspects of a country.

Enemies and rivals were put together as one territory, while countries with friendly relationships were divided up.

An example would be Rwanda and Burundi, which used to be two separate regions until the Europeans put them as one during the Scramble for Africa.
