Depression is when you feel this way for weeks or months at a time and it affects your ability to get on with and enjoy your life. But the good news is there are a variety of treatments that can help with depression, including counselling and other talking therapies. A counsellor can help you explore the feelings you have and accept them.

Depression affects people in a variety of different ways. It can have an impact on your body, mood, behaviour and thoughts. As well as low mood, depression symptoms can include feeling very tearful, irritable or angry, losing interest in things you previously enjoyed or feeling tired and having less energy. You may also lose concentration, self-confidence, appetite and motivation. One reason for becoming depressed can be a change in your life, such as divorce, losing a job, or having a baby.

Disputes and arguments or a breakdown in relationships can cause depression, says Jackie. Bereavement can trigger it too. Sometimes people who put their own needs last and give too much to others can be particularly susceptible to depression. They can also support you to find your own ways to cope with what you are going through — and suggest different strategies and self-care techniques. This could be after a relative or friend has died, after finding out you have a serious illness, if you're struggling with infertility , or if you have lost your job. People with long-term health conditions are more vulnerable to depression, and talking therapies have been proven to help. Older people, especially those with depression, are as likely to benefit from talking therapies as everyone else. Depression in later life, especially over the age of 65, is often dismissed as a normal part of ageing.

But this is not the case, and talking therapy can improve your enjoyment of life if you're feeling low. Take a short test to see if you're depressed. If you've been physically or sexually abused, or have experienced discrimination or racism, you may feel able to cope with life better after a course of talking therapy. Couples therapy can save a relationship that's in trouble or help you through separation and divorce. Ideally, a couple should go to counselling together, but if your partner refuses to join you, counselling can help you sort out lots of things on your own.

Find out how to have a healthy divorce. Family therapy is talking therapy that involves the whole family. It can be especially helpful for children with depression or a behavioural problem, or whose parents are splitting up.

However, many of these complications have also been associated with depression itself. After the child is born, a mother experiencing depression will have to make another related decision: whether to take antidepressants and nurse, to nurse without taking antidepressants or to continue drug therapy and rely on formula to feed the child.

Again, says Choate, the research on the implications of these choices is mixed. There is also significant medical and social pressure for mothers to breastfeed, so female clients who are dealing with depression will need support gathering and considering all the variables to make a decision.

Counselors can play a valuable role in helping clients formulate the right questions, Choate says. As women leave their childbearing years behind, they also face increased risk of depression. Women are valued for their youth, beauty and fertility, and as they grow older and no longer reproduce, they lose societal status, Choate says. So, Choate concludes, although hormonal factors are certainly a contributing factor, counselors should be aware of all the sociocultural influences that make women and girls more vulnerable to depression.
